It-has been-there

--My second solo exhibition, ¡®It-has been-there¡¯, is the first one of exhibitions planned to held every ten years. Ten years period is the time to confirm existence of those who were taken picture including me. For work after 10 years, I keep the name, ID number, address, telephone number of the people taken pictures. These document might be important role of work that will be exhibited 10 years later which is ¡°It-has been-there¡±.

Peoples who were taken pictures are : parents, relatives, sibling, beloved teachers, friends, people whom I encounter in daily life and the deceased family members. Among them, the living play crucial roles of my present life. I am much interested in how they have lived and how they will have. The dead are the ones who have supported to be what I am. So I thought I kept on record not only living people but the deceased who made my life. All these people have gave much influence and reason on my life and it will last for the future. I would like to put these relations into my work. That was expressed through a made of photograph.

Photograph is a medium showing existence of past. It might be fake meaning of object, but it does not tell a lie about object itself. Thus image on printing paper makes spectator believe that there had been some object in the past. The pictures enclosed with black ribbons in the exhibition of ¡®It has been there' is the evidence of death(absence), on the other hand, it can be the evidence of life. The picture of the living is also a piece of evidence of life. However, the picture which proved the living(being) will be the picture of the spirit of the departed. People can see this kinds of case in their life.In the case of sudden death pictures of ID card or passport are often seemed to be used as pictures of the spirit departed. I had experienced this during my work. One of people whom I planned to take pictured died suddenly by accident. If I had taken a picture of him, I would have experienced life death through. In accordance with physical matter and cultural customs, a picture showing both life and death become the one as an evidence of being and absence at the same time. In order to display dual nature of photograph, I scattered pictures of the living and the deceased randomly without distinction and I also wanted to express life and death were still in existence in daily life.

In my second exhibition, I didn't hang the pictures of 300 people on the wall, but I set up them on the floor of the exhibition hall disorderly. The floor was also covered with cotton clothes and hairs. In oriental society, cotton cloth is symbol of life and death for that human being touched it when they were born and dead. Moreover, hairs have special meaning. Corps can not last forever. So to speak, hairs are the substitute of the dead body. Among articles used or kept by the dead in their lifetime, most of all, as people think regard spirituality dwells with hairs, hairs appear in ritual for the dead quite often than any other things. That is the original fetishism. Hairs have same value as the deceased by the literary imagination and symbol. Hairs will remain as the proof of existence and absence. I put 300 framed pictures on cotton cloth and hairs disorderly. That was the reason why I would like to make spectators to remind them of tombs and tombstone scattered in the public cemetery and I shut visitors from entering the exhibition hall. I intended to express that internal and external of the hall compared with death and life.
